Is Your Mind Leading You in the Wrong Direction?

Have you ever had a battle going on in your mind? You know the sort. One thought leads to another, and before you know it, you've imagined every possible disaster! Our minds can certainly keep us busy, can't they?
The truth is, we don't have to believe every thought that pops into our heads. God has given us His Word to help us recognise those thoughts that don't line up with His truth and learn to replace them with what He says about us.
I've been working on my new devotional, A Mind Anchored in Christ, and today I'd love to share Day 1 with you. My prayer is that it will encourage you to take the first step towards renewing your mind and discovering the freedom that comes from thinking God's way.
So, grab a cuppa, and let's get started!
Notice a Wandering Mind
Scripture
You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.
Isaiah 26:3 NIV
Encouragement
Your mind can take you places you never intended to go. One moment you’re thinking about something small, and before long, you’re worrying about tomorrow, replaying yesterday, or lost in every what-if you can imagine. This is what I call a wandering mind.
It often happens so gradually that you don’t even notice, with one thought leading to another until you’ve drifted far from where you started.
But God wants to meet you right there, in your thoughts. Isaiah 26:3 reminds us that God gives peace to those whose minds remain steadfast because they trust in Him. That doesn’t mean you’ll never have a worrying thought.
The first step is simply learning to notice when your mind begins to wander. Worry can quickly take over your thoughts, but it doesn’t have to control your day. When you notice your mind wandering, stop for a moment and realise where your thoughts have taken you. You don’t have to fix everything right away. First, notice what is happening. Tomorrow may feel uncertain, but God already holds it in His hands. There is no need to solve everything today. Simply turn your mind towards Him and trust Him with what lies ahead.
Catch the Thought
Today, begin by simply noticing what is happening in your mind. When you become aware of an anxious, worrying, or distracting thought, stop for a moment. Ask yourself: What am I thinking right now? Where has my mind wandered?
Write down one thought that has been taking up space in your mind.
Challenge the Thought
Now look at the thought you have written down. Don’t try to fix it yet.
Simply notice it and ask yourself: What has been taking up space in my
thoughts?
Why do I keep coming back to this thought?
You may be surprised by how often your mind returns to the same worries, fears, or concerns without you even realising it.
Today, your goal is not to change the thought. It is simply to notice it. That is the first step.
God’s Truth
I don’t have to let every thought take control of my mind. I can bring my thoughts to God, turn my attention towards Him, and choose to trust Him.
Today’s Action
Whenever you notice your mind becoming anxious or overwhelmed today:
Stop.
Take a slow breath.
Say: Jesus, I trust You.
Turn your thoughts towards God’s goodness.
Continue with what you were doing.
Do this as many times as you need to throughout the day.
Today’s Mind Anchor
I can turn my mind towards God when worry begins to take over, and I will trust Him with what lies ahead.
Prayer
Father, help me draw my thoughts back to You whenever my mind begins to wander. When worrying or negative thoughts come, remind me that I don’t have to carry them alone. Help me trust You with the things that trouble me and rest in Your peace. I choose to fix my thoughts on You and on Your Word.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.
My Thoughts & Reflection
1. What thought has been taking up the most space in my mind today?
2. Where does my mind wander when I am worried or unsettled?
3. Did I notice a thought pattern today that I hadn’t noticed before?
